Text Structure and Purpose
Last updated October 26, 2026
The question asks what the text is for, how it is built, or what one underlined part of it does. It belongs to the Craft and Structure domain of the Digital SAT Reading and Writing section.
How to approach Text Structure and Purpose questions
Main purpose
- MINDMAP the KEY POINTS of the text, from start to end.
- Turn them into a STATEMENT before you look at the choices.
- It is THE WHOLE PASSAGE PUT TOGETHER that gives you the answer. Do not be obsessed with a single part.
Overall structure
- Count the structural flows in the choices. There are always two or three.
- Understand each one specifically, and be especially precise where one flow moves onto the next.
- Check the VERB, not the subject.
- Every link in a choice's chain must be true.
Function of the underlined portion
- Classify the question from the OPTIONS, not the stem. An EASY FUNCTION Q can be answered from the underlined portion alone; a TRUE FUNCTION Q asks for its function in the text as a whole. Focus on both equally.
- “The text as a whole” means the portion's place in the STRUCTURAL FLOW, which is not always the literal whole text.
- Name the sentence before it and the sentence after it first.
- The wrong choices are real content from the wrong place.
- Mark each question you solve Easy or True, so that you do not overthink the easy ones.
The habit that ruins students on this type
Students overthink the easy function questions and underthink the true ones. Focus on both equally.
